Director's Welcome

Welcome to Hangzhou International School for 2017-18

Dear HIS Community and Visitors,

On behalf of Hangzhou International School (HIS), I welcome you to our school website and the 2017-18 school year. Our intent is to maintain webpages and links that reflect the unique teaching and learning experience at HIS. While we have done our best to share our environment with you, HIS is best experienced in person. Current and prospective HIS parents are most welcome on our campus where there are daily events and activities to take part in (including just relaxing in the café and casually observing student-community life).

As an IB World School, we provide a rigorous, high-caliber academic program for all ages of student. HIS recently added the newly launched International Early Years Curriculum (IEYC) to our existing International Primary Years Curriculum (IPC) for Grades 1-5, International Middle Years Curriculum (IMYC) for Grades 6-8, and International Baccalaureate Diploma Program for Grades 11-12. These programs are recognized worldwide, and therefore, whether your next educational experience is back to your home country or to another international school, you can be assured of the 'portability' and acceptance of your child’s achievements at HIS. HIS students continue to score well above peer norms on NWEA MAP standardized test measures while still having a “complete” learning experience within a rich and comprehensive extracurricular program. Upper School student participation in IB coursework is 100% and final results have been truly exceptional.

Classroom learning are fully “wired” at HIS. With a commitment to a 1-to-1 laptop initiative in grades 4-12, students receive an Apple Macbook as one of their required educational resources and the entire campus provides wireless access for the HIS community. Over the years, HIS has steadily augmented and upgraded its facilities and resources to match the growing student population, the requirements of a more robust high school program, and the demands of the future in education.

HIS also continues to compete successfully in regional sporting events, such as ACAMIS, SISAC and CISSA sporting leagues, and even including the ‘Dragon Cup’ athletic exchange between all three SCIS and HIS sister schools in volleyball, football (soccer), swimming and basketball. HIS hosts the regionally acclaimed Westlake Model UN conference each fall and continues to provide Hangzhou with outstanding theater productions.

Overall, a hallmark of HIS has been our commitment to high standards of academic excellence as recognized by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) accrediting organization.  We commit to the process of self-study and external evaluation of our on-going school improvement processes. The latest WASC accreditation letter recognizes ‘stellar’ aspects of our school and congratulates HIS for the high quality of instruction offered. We are very proud of our educational program and the commitment of our entire community in creating such a supportive learning environment.

If you are new to the school, I invite you to review these webpages to learn what we are about and why so many people have decided that HIS is the school for them. Further, if you are already part of our community, you will find access to much information that will assist you in taking advantage of everything our school system has to offer, including access to our school learning portal that allows you to follow assessment and reporting information for your child, calendar events, and classroom links.

A focus on curriculum and instruction as well as fine facilities and resources are, indeed, attributes of a good school. However, truly great educational institutions focus their efforts, time, and energy on our most treasured resource– people. It is the people of Hangzhou International School that make it an outstanding school. Students, teachers, and parents are welcomed here, and know that their voice is heard and matters. I have been associated with the school for ten years, and continue to experience a sense of caring for individuals and the HIS community.  HIS is truly a unique international school.

Again, welcome to HIS and... GoooOOO Gold Dragons!

Sincerely,

Jeffry R. Stubbs
Director of Schools
