Upper School

Welcome to the Hangzhou International School Upper School. Our mission is to provide international learners with opportunities to pursue academic and personal excellence within a caring community. 

We are excited to have you join us this year! HIS is an amazing place to learn, create connections, and make friends. We are a diverse community population with excellent parental support and a quality venue for learning.

HIS has a strong history of academic success since 2002 when it was established. Students have achieved successful results, entered quality universities and colleges, and moved further into the larger society as positive citizens of a global world. It has been the community atmosphere, the caring and nurturing teachers, and the students themselves who have been responsible for HIS's success. We are developing student-centered approaches to learning in order to encourage students to build their skillsets and develop their learning through an inquiry format. The teachers provide effective approaches to teaching to ensure that the content is contextualized and relevant to the real world.

Regardless of whether students attend HIS from kindergarten through grade 12 or only stay a few years, we want to ensure that they have access to the learning and life skills that will help them to succeed on into the future. Using the IB Learner Profile and the IMYC Personal Dispositions as guides for student qualities, we are able to produce students who "know how to know" and who "learn how to learn" using a variety of necessary soft skills including communication, thinking, self-management, research, and social skills. Furthermore, we encourage mindful approaches to resilience, perseverance, inquiry, and being a principled individual.

Our grades 6-8 academic program is founded on the International Middle Years Curriculum, which brings a contextualized and transdisciplinary approach to the students' learning. Core and elective courses are taught to develop the links between the concepts and big ideas presented across the subjects. Students enter the unit with an exciting activity and exit it by sharing their learning across the subjects. Throughout, they are challenged to develop their skills and understanding.

In High School, grades 9-10, our program is a Pre-IB program, designed to scaffold the student progress toward the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme. Students will use similar methodology and assessment methods, but will build foundations for the DP courses beginning in grade 11. Taking part in individual research-based assessments in each course and developing learning skills to help them manage their time and study techniques effectively, the high school years are a necessary preparation for success.

In the IB DIploma Programme, students are encouraged to develop content knowledge, but also to act more independently with regards to their learning. Teachers will guide and encourage students development, but will generally support student inquiry methods and opportunities for contextualized connections. The IB Diploma Programme is recognized world-wide as an excellent preparation for the future academic studies.

Students are also supported through the HIS Advisory Program, which meets twice a week to provide pastoral, social, learning-skills development, and emotional well-being sessions. Students can take part in activities and events through this time after luch as well.
