Official Study Word List 2019

Monday, February 25, 2019

The Annual HIS Spelling Bee season is upon us! A spelling bee is a competition in which contestants are asked to spell a broad selection of words, usually with a varying degree of difficulty. This competition is completely optional and is currently open to all students inGrades 2 – 8. There will be three levels of competition: Bronze Dragons (Grade 2 & 3), Silver Dragons (Grade 4 & 5) and Gold Dragons (Grade 6, 7 & 8)

Two Rounds of Competition:

There will be two rounds of competition. Round 1 is a written test and Round 2 is a verbal test. Definitions have been provided to support the learning of the words. The word lists and definitions are available on the HIS website .

Round 1 will be on Monday, April 8. It will take place after school at 3:15pm. The Bronze, Silver, and Gold levels of competition will take place in three separate locations. Locations will be decided and communicated at a later date, depending on the number of students who register. All interested participants in Grades 2 – 8 are welcome to register before March 18. Students will be given 40 words to spell on paper. 30 of these words will come from their competition level’s list and 10 will be unseen words. The six highest scoring entrants from each competition level will progress to the second round. All materials (pencils, paper, etc) will be provided.

Round 2 will be on Monday, April 22. It will take place after school at 3:15pm. Finalists from all three competition levels should be present from start to finish. Students will be given a range of words to spell verbally from their competition level list, as well as the list above them. (For example, if you are in the Bronze competition level, you may be tested on words from Bronze and Silver lists). In the case of the Gold Dragons, an additional Extension word list has been provided to study from. Gold Dragons will be tested from their own list, as well as the extension list. In all levels of competition, an unseen list of challenge words may be used if there is a need to separate the winner. During Round 2, students may ask for the word to be repeated once, for the definition, and for the word to be used in a sentence. However, these sentences will not be provided for study beforehand. The winner from the Bronze Dragons and Silver Dragons levels will be allowed to enter the next level’s competition. All finalists will receive a certificate award and t-shirt, and the winner of each level will receive a special award.

The HIS Spelling Bee is designed to support our phonics and grammar programs, and is intended to be a fun and motivational activity. All decisions made by the organizers of the competition are final. While we will always accept feedback regarding our activities and programs, we appreciate in advance your understanding that this competition is organized in good faith. Please direct any questions about the Spelling Bee to Ms. Tanya at tjensen@hischina. org.

We hope this information helps, and happy spelling! Bee-lieve in yourself!
