                  PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

Dear Families,

PYP Grade 5 Exhibition

As we approach the much-anticipated Grade 5 opening ceremony and the exciting Exhibition, the atmosphere is filled with a mix of excitement and nerves. The grade 5 team and students can't wait to share this special event with families, friends, staff, and students across the school.

As a mentor, it has been so enjoyable to spend time each week getting to know my group, and I have learned so much, too, about their chosen area of inquiry. I joined them as they interviewed an expert in the field and had a wonderful day sharing with them and their parents what the future may hold for robots at the Robotics Exhibition Park.

Like every group, they are busy planning how to engage their audience with the aesthetics and resources they will use. The day of the poster has been replaced with multi-modal texts, hands-on activities and materials that will require much greater audience participation.

The High Seas

The countdown for our wonderful theatre musical production, The High Seas, with two performances next Friday, 17 May, at either 1.30 pm -2.30 pm or 5.30 pm - 6.30 pm, is drawing closer. Next Thursday will be the full-dress rehearsal with our younger classes being the audience.

Please check below to ensure you know which time your child’s class will be performing.

The 1st performance at 1:30 pm will be led by: 3A, 3C, 4A, 4C, 5B, 5C

The 2nd performance at 5:30 pm will be led by:3B, 3D, 4B, 4D, 5A, 5D

Those students at 5.30 pm will remain at school, attend CCAs or other activities as usual if they have them, eat dinner in the cafeteria, and then be ready to go on stage at 5.30 pm. Staff will be supervising them after school.

This will surely be a wonderful highlight of the school year, and we thank Ms. Farina and her team for the enormous work they have already undertaken.

NWEA Grade 2-5

Our NWEA testing period will commence Monday, 27 May to Tuesday, June 4. Make-ups, June 5-12.

Please share the link below with your child and undertake some of the practice tests. https://warmup.nwea.org/index.html

I will be sending further tips home over the coming weeks.

Weather

Slowly, days are warming, and temperatures in the late 20s C are expected next week. Please ensure your child's clothing, jackets, and water bottles are clearly labeled so they can be returned.

Please have your child wear a hat(the bucket hats from the Uniform shop are ideal) for sun protection.

Have a great week, and remember that CCAs will continue with the Exhibition and The High Seas productions this Friday and next.

Warm regards,

Lynn

PYPx Update

Last week, our fantastic Grade 3 learners provided a thought-provoking exhibition of their unit of inquiry under the transdisciplinary theme, “How the World Works,” in which they explored the possibility of designing and creating resources as a response to their understanding of the impact of climate and weather. They demonstrated strong thinking skills and were truly creative in their innovations. Congratulations to our innovative Grade 3 learners!

PYPx Update

Our Grade 5 students are in the final stages of preparation for their PYP Exhibition this Friday.  This week, they will finalize their modes of expression and create their exhibition spaces. As you can imagine, this is a busy and potentially stressful time for them.  If you are the parent of a G5 student, please provide them with extra encouragement and TLC as they will undoubtedly be working hard to meet their deadlines and ensure they are prepared for Friday morning.

                  LIBRARY NEWS ECE

Mother's Day is just around the corner, and in preparation, we're delving into heartwarming books that celebrate the essence of motherhood. As students engage in conversations about their mothers, they showcase exceptional communication skills by sharing delightful anecdotes about their moms' hobbies and cherished shared activities. Inspired by their deep affection, some friends are enthusiastically creating something for their mother to express their love.

              LIBRARY NEWS Grade1-5

Dear HIS Families,

This week, I am happy to recognize the students and teachers who have read 6 or more books from the Battle of the Books! Please have a look at the posters to see who the readers are! This year’s Buddy Edition Battle of the Books is going well, and students are engaging with the variety of books available. There are picture books, fiction and non-fiction, fiction chapter books and non-fiction texts. Something for everyone! Only a few more weeks and the students will vote for their favorite books read!

Remember, once you have read a book, come to the library to do the quiz and then you get your bookmark on the Battle of the Books window.

For this coming week’s Read Aloud, that can be found on Moments 365 on Tuesday afternoons, the book is called “Hey Wall – A Story of Art and Community” written by Susan Verde and illustrated by John Parra. This is a story about coming together as a community to turn something mundane into something beautiful. This story also relates well with the Grade 5 PYP Exhibition happening this week. Wishing all the grade 5 students the best of luck with their exhibition presentations this week.

PICK UP OF STUDENTS DELAYS  AND IMPORTANT MESSAGES TO TEACHERS

Please assist staff by advising us early (before lunchtime) wherever possible, if you need your child to do something different at their usual pick-up time and location. Teachers focus on working and engaging their class while maintaining a safe environment. They get to their computers sporadically and may miss changes. In addition, some classes are with Specialist staff for the last lesson and bring the students to the pick-up locations. They may be unaware of last-minute changes.

If you need to make a late change to plans, I'd suggest you send a message to our Lower School secretaries, florali@hisdragons.org.cn or in the ECE lilyfan@hisdragons.org.cn, and they can pass on your message.

PAFA Kitchen – Recap of the Korean cooking class! (2 QR codes of photos attached)

One beautiful spring morning, our culinary journey delved into the heart of Korean cuisine within the bustling Korean kitchen. Guided by a vibrant group of Korean moms, we embarked on a flavorful adventure. As sizzling vegetables danced in the pan for Bibimbab, fragrant Korean spices wafted through the air, infusing the class with a taste of Korea. The bubbling Doenjang jijgae stew, rich with soybean paste and vibrant veggies, promised a wholesome delight. Then came the star of the show - kimchi and chives pancakes, a crispy indulgence that left us craving more with each savory bite. Amid laughter and camaraderie, we mastered the art of the perfect pancake flip, a challenge embraced with gusto. Learning the art of marinating kimchi, that beloved pickled cabbage, further enriched our culinary repertoire. Finally, as we sat down to savor the fruits of our labor, old and new friendships blossomed over a table brimming with homemade Korean delights. A morning well spent, indeed, in the lively tapestry of the Korean kitchen.
