In Environmental Systems and Societies (ESS), Hangzhou International School (HIS) Grade 11 students engaged in two days of data collection and measurements in the field. They explored a waterlogged area adjacent to our HIS campus to investigate how this naturally occurring wetland influences species distribution.
Students set up a transect and used quadrat sampling to estimate the impact of zonation on population density and percentage cover of various species. They also assessed water quality parameters, measuring turbidity with Secchi disks and turbidity tubes, and collected water samples to analyze pH, nitrate, and phosphate levels. Additionally, soil samples were gathered to examine soil profiles and humidity levels.
This hands-on experience allowed students to gain practical insights into the ecological dynamics of wetlands and their significance in supporting biodiversity.
