- Duke of Edinburgh's International Award
On Saturday morning, 19 enthusiastic students gathered at Hangzhou International School, their hiking packs brimming with food, tents, and essential gear. They were about to embark on their Qualifying Journey for the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award—a significant milestone that emphasizes teamwork, resilience, and overcoming challenges. Where they show their skills in navigation with map and compass, camping and more.
As we drove out of the city, winding through picturesque landscapes, anticipation filled the air. Upon arrival, the students met their Indra guides, who helped them with navigation and planning their route on the map. With compasses in hand, they set off on a formidable 19-kilometer trek, navigating through areas flooded by the rains and battling fierce winds that even turned to hail momentarily.
Fortunately, as the clouds began to clear, spirits lifted. Students hiked alongside a serene river, and upon reaching the campsite, they wasted no time in setting up their tents. Teamwork was on full display as they collaborated to prepare dinner, fostering camaraderie and a sense of community. However, strong winds picked up, urging them into their tents for the night.
The following day brought a welcome change: the winds began to calm, and the sun shone brightly. The Bronze participants took a shorter route of 12 kilometers, which presented its own challenges, including overgrown paths and two steep mountains. Meanwhile, the Silver group continued on toward a scenic reserve, camping beside the water and making good progress under the clear skies.
As the Bronze students returned home feeling very accomplished, the Silver group came together once more to cook and share stories under the full moon, marveling at the stunning stars that lit up the night sky.
On day three, the Silver students faced the daunting task of climbing the two steep mountains. Carrying their heavy packs made the challenge even greater, but they supported each other in overcoming these obstacles.
This adventure was not just about hiking and camping; it was a powerful lesson in building resilience and working together to overcome. As these students returned from their journey, they carried with them not only memories of their experiences but also invaluable life skills that will serve them well in the future.
