What is the DMC?
The Delegate Mentor Committee, or DMC, is a part of Hangzhou International School's Model United Nations (MUN) Secretariat. In the DMC, we mentor middle and high school delegates, ranging from beginners to advanced.
Although the DMC is a new division of the HIS MUN Secretariat, established in the spring of 2025, it has blossomed, becoming an opportunity for growth, collaboration, and leadership within HIS’s MUN community.

What opportunities are provided for delegates?
Student delegates get practical help with research, writing, and debate techniques, while also being given the opportunity to receive personalized feedback during the conference preparation process.
This tailored support better equips delegates for the challenges faced in the committee room and builds much-needed confidence in our beginner delegates.
The DMC provides a safe environment for students to explore new skills and familiarise themselves with procedures before going into the larger MUN arena, providing them with many opportunities to challenge themselves and grow.

What opportunities are provided for mentors?
The delegate mentor experience involves weekly meetings to coordinate planning for the MUN CCA sessions, working closely with MUN directors, and guiding delegates through the conference preparation process.
Mentors not only develop skills in leadership, organization, pedagogy, and lesson design, but build meaningful connections with the delegates and expand their network within the HIS community.
One of the most rewarding aspects of this role has been seeing the progress of the students we mentor. Watching their confidence grow while they practice speeches or construct resolutions to global issues is incredibly fulfilling.

How does DMC tie into wider opportunities at HIS?
Beyond the skills directly related to MUN, the DMC also ties into HIS’s focus on the exploration of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in its curriculum.
We explore critical global issues like climate change, poverty, and education equality through our discussions and debates, which align with the school’s mission to develop globally minded citizens.
Students prepare for MUN conferences and are also engaging with the bigger picture of what it means to be an active, informed global citizen by participating in the DMC.

In conclusion, the DMC is a testament to the opportunities HIS provides for its students to grow as leaders, thinkers, and changemakers.
It’s a space where mentors and delegates can challenge themselves, support each other, and contribute to a community that values growth and collaboration.
