Technology used in Physical Education at Hangzhou International School

At Hangzhou International School we seek to allow students the opportunities to pursue academic excellence, the inclusion of technology in PHE is one of these opportunities for students to embark on a voyage of discovery and learning. We have developed our program to build students skills as they progress through the MYP PHE program.

“It’s pretty hard taking videos and analyzing myself, but it helps me see my mistakes”
- Justin Grade 6

In Grade 6 students are introduced to using Technology for video analysis and presenting their skills and development through the unit Technical Development; Pickleball. Students use Hudle, photobooth, iMovie and PPT to capture and show their own strengths and areas of improvement in different shots in the sport of Pickleball. After initially capturing their own performance and practicing their skills, they then film themselves to show their own development and improvements over the course of the unit.

“It is good because when you are playing you don’t know how you move but when you watch the videos you can see and get better” - Nathan Grade 8

Technology used in Physical Education at Hangzhou International School

Using Technology allows students to freeze frame and draw attention to the angle of their arm or the moment of release for the ball, this attention to detail is in itself an experiment and opportunity for reflection and growth.

This use of technology and development of self-analysis continues through the grades utilizing different sports as vehicles in our Technical Development units; Table Tennis, Badminton, Archery and then a sport of their choosing to capstone their Technology in Sport development.

They use this same video analysis and self-assessment in our Aesthetic Movement Units through; Rhythmic Gymnastics, Line Dance, Parkour, Cultures of Dance and Yoga.

Students in PHE develop 21st century skills as we help to prepare them for the future utilizing Technology in different aspects of their lives.

“It’s been good because you can re-watch your process and evaluate yourself, it’s good to compare yourself to professionals as well and then I can compare my first attempt to after I’ve practice and see the difference”
- Spring Grade 9
