Parent lunch celebrates Korean culture at Hangzhou International School
PAFA (Parents and Friends Association)

The PAFA team are thrilled to share the success of our recent celebration of Korean culture that took place at the Crowne Plaza Hangzhou Riverside on Wednesday 6 November 2024. Over 100 guests, dressed in beautiful traditional Korean attire and stylish K-pop-inspired outfits, came together for this special event.

As the guests arrived, they were welcomed by stunning backdrops featuring a traditional Korean palace door and a K-pop theme, creating the perfect setting for memorable photos alongside cutouts of famous Korean pop stars. To kick off the celebration, guests received welcome gifts of Korean face masks.

Before entering the hall, guests then engaged in activities led by Korean moms, making norigae (traditional decorative tassels) and enjoying yeot, a Korean sweet treat often made by mothers, adding a unique touch to the celebrations.

The day's highlight was an impromptu musical performance by Ji Yeon, a Korean mom, who captivated the audience with her skilled playing of the traditional janggu drum. Her rhythmic beats engaged the entire audience, and enhanced the cultural richness of the event.

The lunch began with a warm welcome from our PAFA social committee chairperson, Anuja, alongside Katie. They welcomed Kristine and the other Korean moms, dressed in traditional attire, to the stage and expressed their gratitude for their help decorating the venue and sharing their cultural heritage with the parent community.

The lunch menu at the hotel offered an amazing selection, featuring traditional Korean dishes like spicy fried rice cakes, soybean soup, Korean fried chicken, roasted pork, and kimchi pancakes, along with Chinese and Western options.

After lunch, everyone enjoyed the traditional Korean tagging game 무궁화 꽃이 피었습니다 (mugunghwa kkotchi pieosseumnida), with laughter and energy filling the hall. This was followed by the dalgona challenge, a cookie game where the first two winners at each table received special gifts. The prizes were bottles of soju dressed in beautiful traditional Korean attire.

The PAFA social committee is very grateful for the opportunity to organize this wonderful celebration, and we would like to extend our thanks to all the parents, volunteers, and school administration for their support in making this event a success.

We look forward to more opportunities to celebrate the diversity of our community. Stay tuned for our upcoming PAFA events, where we will continue highlighting the unique traditions that enrich Hangzhou International School!
