- Student Support

At Hangzhou International School, we aim to remove barriers to participation - whether that means helping a student strengthen their core for writing, regulate their energy for group work, or develop the coordination needed for playground games, so they can fully engage in their learning and school life. I’m excited to collaborate with staff and families to support meaningful participation for every student.
So, what is an ‘Occupational Therapist’ I hear you ask? School-based occupational therapists focus on improving students’ access to education by supporting their functional performance across school-based occupations, such as participating in classroom routines, engaging in learning tasks, and navigating the school environment.
Did you know your child’s ability to focus, write comfortably, and enjoy playtime may be linked to their core strength? There’s a strong yet often overlooked connection between physical development and learning.
What is core strength, and why should you care?
Imagine a tree trying to grow tall without a sturdy trunk. That’s what learning can feel like for a child with weak core muscles. Core strength—centered around the abdomen, pelvis, and back—is what helps children sit upright, move with ease, and stay engaged in both classroom tasks and playground adventures.
With more time spent sitting, whether in classrooms, cars, or in front of screens - many children aren’t getting the daily movement needed to build essential core muscles. The impact? Slouching, fidgeting, fatigue, and challenges with handwriting, sports, and coordination. When kids are working hard just to stay upright, there’s less energy and focus left for learning and play

Signs your child might need a core boost
Core weakness can show up in subtle ways. Here are some signs to watch for:
· Slouching or leaning heavily on the table while writing
· Using one hand to prop up their head
· Constantly shifting in their seat or struggling to stay focused
· Getting tired quickly during writing or physical play
· Avoiding playground equipment or rough-and-tumble games
· Difficulty getting up from the floor or climbing
If you’ve noticed any of these, don’t worry - there are plenty of fun ways to help!

Easy & fun core-building activities for home
Core strength doesn’t come from sit-ups; it comes from play! Try these simple, fun activities to help your child grow stronger every day:
· Heavy Lifting Helpers: Let kids carry groceries or laundry baskets
· Playground Power: Encourage climbing, swinging, and balancing
· Animal Walks: Crab, bear, frog, inchworm, and wheelbarrow walks - do this from the bedroom to the bathroom!
· Wobbly Fun: Sit on a yoga ball while playing catch or board games
· Twister & Obstacle Courses: Use pillows and chairs for indoor adventures
· Family Movement: Go for walks, bike rides, or dance breaks together
Little and often is best! Just a few minutes of active play each day can make a big difference in your child’s growth, confidence, and ability to learn.
