On April 23, 2025, the global community celebrated World Book Day, a day dedicated to promoting the joys of reading and storytelling.

At Hangzhou International School ECE Library, we recognize that reading plays a crucial role in child development during the early years. Our dedicated librarians work tirelessly to cultivate a love of books and foster a passion for reading among young learners.

This year, we were thrilled to welcome British author and illustrator Kev Payne to our library. With 17 years of experience as a teacher, Kev brings knowledge and enthusiasm to his interactions with children. He has published numerous story and poetry books, captivating audiences with engaging narratives and vibrant illustrations.

Kev's visit was a highlight of our World Book Day festivities. His sessions were filled with laughter and excitement as he connected with students of all ages.

He began by reading his brand new book, 'Is That My Hat?', a delightful story that enchanted young listeners with its whimsical illustrations and humorous plot. The children were immediately drawn into the narrative, eagerly anticipating each twist and turn.

What set Kev apart was his interactive approach. He didn't just read; he brought the story to life. Students were invited to sing along to catchy tunes and act out some of his poems, turning the library into a lively theater. This engaging format entertained the children and encouraged them to express themselves creatively. Teachers, too, found themselves caught up in the fun, enjoying the vibrant atmosphere and participating alongside their students.

Students who might typically shy away from reading were fully engaged, laughing, and participating without hesitation. The joy of storytelling created a sense of community in the library, where children felt safe to explore their imaginations. Teachers noted how Kev's enthusiasm inspired students to think critically about stories and to appreciate the art of storytelling.

As World Book Day concluded, the excitement from Kev's visit lingered in the air. Students left with smiles on their faces. The event celebrated reading and reinforced literature's essential role in early childhood development.

At HIS ECE Library, we remain committed to nurturing a love of reading in our young learners. Through events like these, we hope to inspire the next generation of readers, writers, and thinkers, ensuring that the magic of books continues to thrive in their lives.
