Last Water Weekly of academic year 2025-26

No practice next week

The last practices have been and gone and we are wishing all of your students a wonderful summer ahead!  Friday 5th June is the last day of any before or after school activity at the Aquatics Centre.

Summer Splash & Towel Swims

Wow, what a way to wrap up the year!

Captains Round‑Up 2025–26

A heartfelt thank you to our captains of 2025–26. Your leadership, support, and modeling have been invaluable to the team. Nearly all captaincies remain steady with some additions, with only the 9–10 boys aging up and opening space for change.

We continue to uphold the principle that captaincies shift only once per year, and only when swimmers age out of their category or when respect and integrity are called into question of an individual. This stability ensures our captains can truly grow into their roles and set the tone for their squads.

Captains 2026–27

Looking ahead, we’re excited to introduce the new captain lineup for 2026–27. Some age groups will feature co‑captaincies, following the successful model of Nikolas and Felix in the 9–10 boys last year. Their teamwork was a fantastic example of shared leadership.

9–10 Years

  • Joy S continues into her second year of captaincy. A co‑captaincy will be added to this age group before Junior ACAMIS 2027, TBA.
  • Jacob Z and Max Z step in as new boys’ captains. Their contrasting styles of leadership complement each other beautifully:
    • Jacob brings boundless positive energy, celebrating teammates’ successes with genuine joy.
    • Max offers calm determination and grit, consistently showing up for his team even in tough moments. His quiet strength and work ethic in training have been inspiring.

Together, Jacob and Max embody the growth, resilience, and camaraderie we value most.

11–12 Years

  • Alison S and Luke P roll confidently into their second year as captains, continuing to guide their squad with consistency!

13–14 Years

  • Shirley L remains captain, joined by new co‑captain Maya M.  Maya's steely grit, determination and intergity cannot be overlooked and we look forward to see Shirley and Maya to inspire many swimmers on our team!
  • Flynn Yu continues his captaincy, now partnered with Jean Mao as co‑captain. Jean's presence at meets is undeniably an inspiration for many and we support Jean in his efforts to continue to swim at the highest of levels. These additions strengthen leadership across the age group and reflect the depth of talent rising through the team.

15 & Over

  • Chen‑Yen Lu and Simeon Borsdorf remain steady as captains, providing experienced guidance and modeling for the senior swimmers.

ALL-STARS

Shanghai ALL-STARS vs. Beijing ALL-STARS – Inaugural Competition Recap

This past month marked the very first ALL-STAR swimming competition, a special event that brought together the fastest student-athletes from schools across Shanghai, Suzhou, and Hangzhou. These swimmers united to form the Shanghai ALL-STARS team, competing head-to-head against the Beijing ALL-STARS in a two-day meet held in a Long Course Meters (50m) pool.

What made this event unique was the spirit of collaboration. Coaches from different schools worked side by side as one coaching team, guiding the athletes together rather than separately. This created a collegiate-style atmosphere where swimmers were encouraged to take more responsibility, build independence, and experience what it feels like to be part of a larger, united team.

For our HIS swimmers, the goal was not only to race fast but also to step outside their comfort zones, to make new friends, learn from peers, and grow as young athletes. By fostering independence and teamwork, we hope this experience inspires them to continue developing both in and out of the pool.

Award Ceremony process and intentions

Aim to start for 6:50pm and finish by 8:00pm (or sooner).

Rainbow Squad, should be finished by 7pm.  All participants will receive an award and be celebrated together.

All other squads should be finished by 8pm.  Not all participants will receive an award, however, everyone is celebrated with a certificate. In hope, the way in which we have designed the award ceremony is student-led, light hearted and not over emotional or formal.

Squad Awards

Each of these squads have three (3) different categories and a boy and girl will receive this award in each squad, apart from the White Squad in which only one award per category was awarded.

Swimmer of the Year

Awarded to the swimmer who demonstrates consistent effort, attitude, and commitment to HIS training throughout the year.

  • Versatility: Excels across a diverse range of strokes, distances, and events.

  • Team impact: Contributes to both freestyle and medley teams, uplifting teammates while pushing them to higher standards.

  • Competitive drive: Strives to perform at the highest level, embracing challenges such as swimming weaker events for long-term growth.

Improver of the year

Awarded to the swimmer who has shown the greatest progression and dedication to improvement.

  • Development pathway: May have started in a lower squad and worked their way up.

  • Resilience: Overcame setbacks such as time away from competition or slower early progress.

  • Work ethic: Consistently gives their all in training and competition.

Sportsperson of the Year

Awarded to the swimmer who embodies positivity, resilience, and advocacy for others.

  • Adversity/comeback: Maintains positivity despite challenges, setting an example for peers.

  • Community spirit: Lights up the team environment, supporting teammates and advocating for others.

Highest point scorer awards

Anyone and all, strictly data driven.  Those who didn't make the attendance averages could qualify.  If the highest point scorer was also voted as Swimmer of the Year, the next person in line for Swimmer of the Year was chosen so one child didn't receive too many accolades.

Highest point scorer in the Lower School (male and female), Middle School (male and female) and High School (male and female).  Trophies for each and a plaque will be mounted outside of The Wave for years to come that will list each years highest point scores with the number of points achieved.

Special award

One swimmer only throughout all teams, OVERALL BEST SWIMMER OF THE YEAR (one person from the entire team).

Special award eligibility, anyone swimming within our competitions could win this, based on data, amount of races vs point average, gold medal score.

Whether enjoying the pool, beach, lake, or waterpark this summer, water safety remains everyone’s responsibility. Stay safe, stay vigilant, and enjoy the season ahead.

May 15 is International Water Safety Day, which aims to raise global awareness of the drowning pandemic and educate youth on water safety. Know more about it at https://www.internationalwatersafetyday.org/

High School Swim Team Awards Process going forward

We are delighted to share that our High School Swim Team will be included in this year’s full Sports Awards Ceremony, celebrated alongside all other HIS teams. Please note that only High School athletes will be recognized at this ceremony, and therefore they will not be awarded during our Aquatics Awards evening (which will focus on Lower and Middle School).

A few of our High School student‑athletes will also take on leadership roles as MCs and hosts of the Aquatics Awards on Tuesday, 2nd June. This is part of our vision to involve High School swimmers in the broader HIS Sports community, ensuring they are awarded with their peers and helping to create lasting legacies and habits that will continue to grow our program.

We extend a big congratulations to Simeon B, Anna L, Anderson L, Evan H, and Naomi X for their outstanding contributions throughout the year. Balancing training with academic commitments during exam season is no small feat, and your dedication and time‑management skills set a powerful example for the next generation of HIS student‑athletes.

Have a wonderful long weekend to all!
