Counseling

The HIS Counseling Program promotes personal, interpersonal, emotional, and academic development for all students through large and small group instruction and individual services. Our proactive and preventative program is designed to complement the HIS Mission in providing international learners with opportunities to pursue academic and personal excellence within a caring community. The role of our counselors is to guide, advise, recommend, consult, and assist with a broad range of concerns and difficulties within the HIS community. This includes our students, parents, carers, teachers, and administrators.  

Students participate in lessons and seminars about transition issues, global citizenship, personal health and safety, conflict resolution, and life beyond school. These are delivered differently depending on the school division. In the lower school, our counseling program is delivered in the classroom alongside their unit of inquiry. Middle School students are taught in the classroom during their advisory periods in collaboration with the advisory teachers and Upper School counselor. The High School students attend seminars as a whole grade level on a range of different topics.  

Another important part of the HIS Counseling Program is supporting families. We provide lectures and seminars to parents and carers on a range of topics. The primary aim of these seminars is to share information and support parents in their quest to raise capable and resilient children and young people.  

HIS work hard to ensure that all students have an equal opportunity to learn and make progress. The Student Support Team make sure that students’ instruction and classroom environment is suitably adapted to their individual needs. HIS Counselors are qualified and experienced in administering a broad range of psychological evaluation tools which are used to identify students’ needs and inform the most suitable intervention.
